About the Item

Alexis Duque Imaginatively charting the psychological experience of space, Alexis Duque produces paintings and drawings of buildings and domestic interiors stacked and conglomerated into trippy, absurd mounds and towers. His compositions are detailed, highly organized, and meticulously architectural. With a psychedelic precision reminiscent of M.C. Escher’s, Duque uses perspectival tricks and surrealistic overlapping to render dozens of skyscrapers as a single red tower; or homes, living rooms, train tracks, and alleys as a mass on the verge of collapsing into itself like a black hole. The wheeling bird’s-eye view that he often employs recalls the Italian Futurists’ soaring imagery of cities as seen from airplanes. Through his playful stacking and piling, he reorders cities to examine the formal properties of their architecture. Alexis Duque holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Antioquia, Colombia. His work has been exhibited in numerous venues including: at El Museo del Barrio, The Drawing Center and Praxis International Gallery in New York; The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Long Beach, CA; Champion Contemporary, Austin, TX; The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art, Midland, MI; RudolfV Gallery, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Galleri Oxholm in Copenhagen, Denmark. We have not examined out of frame. Patrick LoCicero was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959. He attended Youngstown State University, Ohio, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He completed a B.F.A. at Ohio State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1986. His paintings, installations, prints, and multimedia work have been shown in California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. LoCicero's richly layered imagery is characterized by unusual juxtapositions of everyday objects and classical motifs, which play with the viewer's perception of materials and subjects. LoCicero’s assemblage paintings combine collage with painting. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects, and come from a variety of sources including the Kama Sutra, antique children’s books...

    Ellen De Meutter Paint 2, 2007 Acrylic, ink and oil on canvas 31.5 x 23.6 in (80.0 x 59.9 cm) Provenance: Secrets & Lies show at her American gallery Roberts & Tilton, LA in 2007 Ellen De Meutter (1981) teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. In 2006-2007 she followed the HISK programme in Ghent, in 2013-2014 she did a residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. De Meutter is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery since 2006. (they represent Tal R, Marcel Dzama, Tomasz Kowalski and Franz West) Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in Belgium, the United States, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. In 2010 she had her first solo museum exhibition in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. Ellen De Meutter alters her viewer's reality by presenting a language in which she classifies the figures, shapes and colors from her personal world into a captivating utopia. Contrary to current trends in Flemish art, De Meutter is not simply relaying an anecdote; she composes unique imagery that allows her to experiment with the placement of the subject and unique treatments of her medium. De Meutter's repertoire of vivid, semi-neon colors contrast the muted grays blacks and grays on which they lay. These seemingly energetic colors are at once enhanced by the dark undertones of the canvas below, while simultaneously insinuating a concealed gravity of subject. Belgian art critic and curator, Luk Lambrecht remarks on De Meutter's painting: "she folds back 'her' world onto itself, into a solid mass of color from which, very slowly, vague contours emerge, which safeguard our expectations about looking at an image." De Meutter's scenes are reminiscent of schoolyard games, incorporating a series of text and symbols. By combing figurative imagery with basic abstraction, Ellen De Meutter creates wildly successful compositions that allude to her comprehensive understanding of contemporary painting.     Suong Yangchareon (Thai American, 1952-) Acrylic on Canvas Los Angeles Street Scene with yellow taxi cab and cars. Hand signed with Initials. Dimensions: Overall Size: 25 1/4 x 49 1/4 in. Sight Size: 23 5/8 x 47 5/8 in. Yangchareon came to Los Angeles, California from Lampang, Thailand, Southeast Asia where he studied Fine Arts at the Arts & Crafts College (Poh Chang), Bangkok, Thailand and Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. In California he continued his studies at Woodbury University, receiving a degree in Advertising Design. He is a contemporary figurative realist artist. He painted the urban landscape of California, which have been exhibited in solo and group shows. His work is represented by prominent galleries nationally. Yangchareon spent much of his childhood at his father’s movie theater where he became fascinated with the world of American Westerns. The nostalgia for this idyllic film Americana can be garnered through his subject matter. Abandoned theaters, factories and businesses of an almost extinct era of architecture are carefully rendered in the soft morning light. Working from his own photography, shot during the early hours of the day, Yangchareon’s acrylic and oil paintings are largely devoid of human figures, but deeply imbued with their past presence. Recently, the artist has broadened his focus to include imagery of the city at night––rendering glistening rain-soaked sidewalks bathed in the artificial light of street lamps and movie marquees against an inky black sky. Yet, Yangchareon’s motivation remains the same; to find the hidden beauty in varying industrial landscapes and seeing splendor where most would argue it does not exist. Reminiscent of Edward Hopper, a sense of melancholy pervades his compositions in a quiet, detached manner. The influence of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud can also be detected in the artist’s sense of color and in his interpretation of light.     "My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...
